One Four Challenge – Oct Wk 1.. and a blogging break!

Hello again everyone and welcome once again to week 1 of October.  Did you know this is our 12th month playing the One Four Challenge? – it’s gone by so quickly and it’s been a fun journey so far. It’s also been such fun getting to know each other through the challenge (each and everyone who has participated) and seeing everyone’s progress along the way.

Now up front, I do need to tell you something… I need to take a break and step away from the computer for a while (after October’s challenge).  I’m afraid I’ve been struggling with my back again for a while now and this week has been a particularly difficult week.  I’m sure you’ve noticed it’s taking me longer to reply.  I simply need to stop sitting at the computer, which I also do for my day job. So at the end of October, the One Four Challenge and Me will be taking a break for a while.

I will return when I can and so will the challenge. I know this is a surprise and of course it’s not an easy decision, but I simply need to do this.

Has has your week been?  Hope it’s been a good one 🙂  Ok, onward with the challenge!

My image:

This month I decided to play with something completely random, as you can see.  This quirky set of objects really appealed to me… I think it’s very McRetro looking 🙂

This week I opened in Camera Raw, making minor adjustments to highlights, shadows and clarity.  Then I opened in PS – did a touch of cloning and added a curves layer.  That’s it for this week.

Your Image:

It’s over to you and to your image. Looking forward to seeing our image for October!

About the challenge and how it works:

  • This challenge is about processing 1 image in 4 different ways over 4 weeks.
  • We will all  process / post edit (our own chosen image) and share a different version each week. Process it however you like… and tell us a bit about it. You don’t have to show the original image unless you’d like to.  (I’m going to show mine in week 4 along with the 4 variations from the month). Others show theirs from the start. The choice is yours.
  • Try new things, experiment.  Be as creative or subtle as you wish to be. All skill levels are welcome.
  • Each week starts again on Monday (Aussie time) and closes off the following Sunday (at the end of the day), so there is a whole week for you to create your post, link up here and tag your post.

Please Tag and Link up – this makes our challenge work.

  • For WordPress blogs – Tag all of your One Four posts with One Four Challenge, so we can view your posts in the WordPress Reader. See this tutorial on how this works.
  • For Blogger and other platforms – If you are on another blogging platform, please leave a link in a comment on this post, so we can find you!
  • For everyone joining inplease leave a link to your post, under my corresponding blog post for the week.

(Note: if you are on Blogger – I will reply to your One Four post here on my blog, under your comment / post link.  I am unsure why, but my message replies don’t seem to work – others have found the same – so look for them here please).

Thank you for understanding my needs. Lets do October!

Robyn xx

  1. Hi Robyn, Sorry to hear your back is giving you so much grief. Look after yourself. Computers are no good for backs and necks! I know from experience.

It will be interesting to see what you do with your image this month! It is so different from your usual images.

    1. Thanks heaps Chris – I think there are many many of us that suffer with issues from desk jobs.
I know… my image is very different. I have a couple of little ideas of what I might do, but for some reason it just appealed on a simple level and the colours!

  2. McRetro lol 😉 Totally understand you needing a break! I had to forgo last months challenge. I have a programmer friend who has an adjustable top to his desk so he can work standing up and not mess his back up! I’m very jealous and wish I had room for one at home.

      1. It’s one of the things that I miss about my days painting large canvases. I was always stood and kept very mobile, moving away from the canvas to get a different view. I’m sure it was much healthier for me in many ways!! Really hope the pain starts to ease soon. I totally empathise with you! Have more Happy Meals 😉

      2. Thank you Sarah – yes moving around is the best.
Perhaps there is more painting for me in the future – sure hope so 🙂
Thank for your empathy. It seems there are many of us. Hopefully time will help.
Ha ha the Happy meal wasn’t mine – But I could go a Bacon and Egg McMuffin. That’s all I really like 😛

      3. Yes I think it is modern life – I need to get in front of it though and it’s going to take some more work on my behalf. Need to focus for a bit.
        We don’t do Macca’s often either – I like the McMuffin 😉

  4. so sad to hear about your back; spending too much on the computer seems to be a real problem in today’s world. I really don’t know how the people who run challenges manage to keep it up. I will miss you but have a very good break and get well.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words Eliza. I really appreciate your good wishes 😃
You are so right about computers and our health. It seems to be very common these days.
I’ll still be around for October but so nice to be missed – thank you xx

  5. Sorry to hear you are having back problems. I understand the break even though I just joined in last month with the challenge. I’ll be looking forward to joining again when you start it back up.
Your image is an interesting choice. – It has some cheery colors and it will be fun to see how you edit it in 4 different ways.

My image is very different I know…lol Looking forward to yours too. 😀

    1. Thanks Eina – so nice to hear from you 🙂 I appreciate your wishes and I’m hoping to improve and keep healthy in the next while.
Glad you like the silly fun image. Thank you 😀

  6. Hey Miss .. Love your retro image. I do so hope your back gets better. I’m nursing a bung neck (that’s an understatement) .. I would so love a standing work environ, something I need to get cracking on! Rest up Robyn 😀

    1. Thank you so much Jules and I’m so sorry to hear your neck is bad… not good!
Please take care and nurse that neck back to being better xx I am resting. Thank you x
The standing desks have almost become a necessity so we move around.

  7. Hi Robyn, So sorry to hear about your back. I hope it will improve fast. I’m afraid I’ll get lazy without the One Four Challenge but I’ll try to continue to experiment with my pictures.

    1. Thank you Agnes 😃 Fast would be so good, but it’s a slow steady process this time.
Please keep up your beautiful and exciting work. I love the directions you are taking. I will miss the One Four too!

  8. I am so sorry to hear about your struggles, I do hope you will take care of yourself. I had some minor problems with my back and I tried to spend as little time as possilbe sitting behind my desk.
Although I will miss One Four Challenge, I decided to pull out even before your announcement. I realized I was spending too much time editing images I don’t necessary like, instead of taking time to actually learn more about photography. Also, my passion for writing was suffering because of too many photography challenges. So, I need to step away and figure some things out.
With all that said, I will keep an eye on your blog and hope you will continue to publish your beautiful images.
This month’s image is so quirky, I like your departure from the usual stuff. Nice and soft edit, improves my opinion about McDonalds. 😀

    1. Dear Lore, thank you for your kind and supportive message and wishes. I do hope you and your back are feeling better.
I think it’s very important to stand back and reassess.
I completely agree and it’s the same for me with photography regarding editing and the challenges.
For me I truly believe the One Four was/is for a time – that time is yet to be determined, but it was never to be forever and ever… learning and honing our skills with the camera is really what it’s all about.
Glad you like my quirky image. Thank you and enjoy being out with the camera xx 😃

  9. Robyn – so sorry to hear about your back issues – I hope your recover soon. Love your retro look in your photo!!! I don’t know if this will help you at all – but I am planning on purchasing a Vari Desk – which allows you to sit or stand at your desk. You just place it on top of your existing desk. Here is the website if interested:

Also – here is my edit for the week – take care!!!!
